In a time where it’s easy to feel disconnected, creating and nurturing meaningful connections—both with ourselves and others—is essential. This blog explores the importance of taking time for yourself, understanding how vulnerability can lead to growth, and the value of finding support when isolation creeps in. From practicing self-care to reaching out for help when needed, we dive into how building a safe space for reflection and growth allows us to build stronger bonds with our communities. Join us as we take a chance on community, finding strength and support in both the quiet moments and shared spaces.
The Importance of Finding Space to be Yourself
Alone doesn't HAVE to mean lonely. When we make time to be present in our own presences we build a safe space to authentically express ourselves. A great amount of personal growth and self-awareness can be achieved when we take time to reflect. Challenge yourself to habitually practice self-care. “What does that look like,” you ask? Start by creating a list of affirmations to recite, activities to enjoy, and items that bring positive emotions. It truly is limitless, the only requirement is that it be something that YOU can do for YOU! When we’ve created a space to be ourselves we’re more likely to acknowledge when we need additional support to get through what we’re going through.
Finding Support When Alone: Overcoming Vulnerability
What happens when alone begins to seep into loneliness and isolation? No one is immune to these feelings. It takes courage to ask for help when we’re struggling. Many of us feel uncomfortable doing so, we’d rather go without getting our needs met than to be in a space of vulnerability. Ask yourself, “Is this true for me?” *Studies revealed that social connectedness is one of the key factors in maintaining mental wellness and resilience against stress. Vulnerability is a key component to building trust. Who do you trust enough to reach out to when you’re in need? Jot down these names, but more importantly, reach out to them when things get rough. Strength comes in knowing when and where to seek connection.
For most of us, it may be easy to count the ways we’ve shown up for someone else versus the moments we've allowed others to do the same for us. Accepting assistance does not mean you're weak, or incapable, or whatever else you tell yourself. Asking for help is truly a form of connection. According to Psychology Today (2023), people who are willing to ask for help are often seen as more authentic and form deeper connections with others. Allowing members of our community to support us during challenging moments can show them we trust in their ability to meet our needs.
The Value of Community Spaces

We all belong to many communities–family, sports teams, peer groups, etc. No matter the group you identify with, it is important to ensure you feel safe and accepted within that community. Do you have room to make mistakes and work through misunderstandings? As you build a list of spaces you’re a part of, analyze the ways you show up within those communities as well as how they show up for you. Hopefully your list includes online spaces in addition to physical places. The impact of digital communities on mental health has been positive and plentiful. Since COVID, most people can pinpoint an online group they are a part of, feeling well connected, even if they have not met in person. If you are looking for an online community, look to join Brush Box’s monthly live art sessions. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, we host a live art session; those who tune in are invited to participate in the art activity, work on their projects, or simply be present in the company of others.
Creating Connections That Last
There is great joy that can be found in shared experiences and shared spaces. Knowing we’re not alone in our journey can be impactful to our mental health and sense of self. Whether it be a long-standing community or a new group we’re taking a chance on, it is worthwhile to form lasting bonds, even if it takes time. The feeling of being truly seen and supported by others is unmatched. So, celebrate the relationships, support, and growth within your chosen communities.
